Atom beam velocity measurements using phase choppers

چکیده
We describe a new method to measure atom beam velocity in an atom interferometer using phase choppers. Phase choppers are analogous to mechanical chopping discs, but rather than being transmitted or blocked by mechanical choppers, an atom receives different differential phase shifts (e.g. zero or π radians) from phase choppers. Phase choppers yield 0.1% uncertainty measurements of beam velocity in our interferometer with 20min of data and enable new measurements of polarizability with unprecedented precision.

Optimized Atom Interferometer Design Including van der Waals Interactions
The problem of designing an atom interferometer with optimum sensitivity to de Broglie wave phase shifts is revisited. Because van der Waals interactions affect how efficiently material gratings work as beam splitters, we find the optimum open fraction for each of the gratings in a three-grating Mach Zehnder atom interferometer depends on the van der Waals interaction strength as well as the at...
متن کاملReflective Optical Chopper Used in NIST High-Power Laser Measurements
For the past ten years, NIST has used high-reflectivity, optical choppers as beamsplitters and attenuators when calibrating the absolute responsivity and response linearity of detectors used with high-power CW lasers. The chopper-based technique has several advantages over the use of wedge-shaped transparent materials (usually crystals) often used as beam splitters in this type of measurement s...
متن کاملBeam Characterisation Using Laser Self-mixing*
Non-destructive beam diagnostics are highly desirable for essentially any accelerator or storage ring. This concerns the characterization of the primary beam itself, but also for example of atom and molecular jets that are crossed with the primary beam as experimental targets or for diagnostics purposes. A laser feedback interferometer based on the optical self-mixing effect provides a low cost...
متن کاملA Programmable Dsp-based Neutron-chopper Simulator
Neutron choppers at spallation-neutron facilities are rotating devices that are precisely phased to chop a neutron beam. Depending on the mass, moment-ofinertia, and velocity of rotation, a chopper can have a large amount of stored kinetic energy. For example, the PHAROS T-zero chopper at the LANSCE facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory has a rotating kinetic energy of over 1 MJ. When ener...
متن کاملDevelopment of a compact thermal lithium atom beam source for measurements of electron velocity distribution function anisotropy in electron cyclotron resonance plasmas.
The anisotropy of the electron velocity distribution function (EVDF) in plasmas can be deduced from the polarization of emissions induced by anisotropic electron-impact excitation. In this paper, we develop a compact thermal lithium atom beam source for spatially resolved measurements of the EVDF anisotropy in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasmas. The beam system is designed such that the...
